"Avalon backpackers is something not to be missed. The accommodation is cheap, clean and well run with friendly staff. It has a TV room and lounge with open fire in winter and there are computers for travelers to use. Well run and well organized. " (more)

"My husband and I often visit the Blue Mountains and stay in all kinds of accommodation depending on the occasion. When we want to have a weekend away without blowing the budget we stay at No. 14 Budget Accommodation. It is a cozy little place with dorm accommodation upstairs and private rooms downstairs the kitchen area and lounge areas are good meeting places and there is a generally friendly atmosphere. It is a short, but steep, walk to town and the station. The veranda is lovely on a sunny day. Highly recommended! " (more)
Hostels tend to offer budget accommodation. Backpacker hostels are so named due to the fact that most backpackers are students and/or adventurers, looking for a budget vacation in terms of accommodation. In Australia and New Zealand, the term "backpackers" typically refers to the hostel accommodations, while in North America and Europe, "backpacker" refers to the person taking a budget vacation (with or without a physical backpack!). We'll be using the term "backpacker" in its Australian context of course.
The typical traits of backpacker hostel accommodation are based on the principles of shared amenities. Most hostels have a central kitchen, more than one bed in a large room, shared bathrooms on each floor and a shared living room/TV room. Cost is the primary basis upon which backpackers can differentiate from hotels; allowing shared facilities reduces both physical space needed for the hostel and per person rental.
While backpackers are usually used by travelers for short durations, they may also be used for longer stays to house seasonal workers, people out on parole or bail, and professionals in need of temporary housing.
Assuming you are an independent traveler looking for cheap accommodation, here's how you can narrow your selection of backpacker hostels. Look for hostels with:
