The Royal Hotel was built in September 1855 and opened in August 1857. Originally named Schnapper Point Hotel. It changed names in 1876 following visits to the hotel by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, second son of Queen Victoria.

The Royal Hotel was a half-way depot for the famous Cobb & Co. coach service which operated between Melbourne and Sorrento/Portsea. It took approximately 4 hours from Melbourne to Mornington by coach and a further six hours to Sorrento.

In 1920 Prince Edward, Prince of Wales and later Duke of Windsor, held a civic reception in The Victoriana Room, during his state visit to Australia.

Steeped in history, this iconic Mornington location is the heart of this seaside community. The Royal Hotel overlooks Royal Beach with Melbourne set in the distance across Port Phillip Bay.

On September 20th 2012, The Royal Hotel re-opened after a period of closure. Owners Maria Bourke, Dane Shaw & Philippa Shaw are the family behind Melbourne's Walter's Wine Bar at Southgate, successfully operated since 1992. Stage one has seen the Bistro and Victoriana Room renovated and injected with a fresh new lease on life! Combined with Dane's incredible menu and a selection of outstanding wine and beer offerings, The Royal Hotel is now a dining destination.

The Royal Tavern, or back bar, has been updated to offer a modern twist on Royal fare. A combination of industrial and British furnishings, the Tavern is a relaxed environment to drink and eat. The outdoor beer garden offers spectacular bay views, Melbourne CBD on the skyline. Live entertainment includes acoustic soloist on Saturday nights and DJ on Sunday afternoons.

Stage two renovations, has seen the full transformation of The Royal Hotel by December 2013. The hotel exterior has been renovated to resemble its original colour scheme of slate with dark green and regency white. A makeover which will restore this historic building, to its former glory!

The second floor accommodation, including the veranda, offers 5 fully renovated rooms, fit for Royalty. Deluxe accommodation, private balcony and quality furnishings, all part of the new look Royal Hotel.
