Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese system the purports to use both geographic and astronomy laws to increase the positive qi or life force in an area. The history of Feng Shui dates back over 3,500 years to when the ancient Chinese used constellations to find the north-south axis so that positive qi could be maximized while building temples and homes.
Followers of Feng Shui believe that by creating surroundings that maximize the positive qi, an individual is able to improve their quality of life. The five elements fire, earth, metal, water and wood play an important part and form the foundations of Feng Shui. These elements can either have a destructive effect on your daily life or can be harnessed with Feng Shui techniques to improve it.
There are three main schools of Feng Shui:
Form School: This school concentrates on the lay of the land outside the building. Elements such as mountain contours and water bodies are taken into account before constructing a building. It also pays special attention to the placement of furniture inside the house to maximize the positive qi.
Compass School: This school uses a special compass with eight points that represent different energies. The energy from the sun is the main driver but other factors such as the earth's magnetic energy are also factored in. The compass is used to ensure that structures are built in the proper direction.
Flying Star: Flying Star is based on numerology and is considered to be the most comprehensive method of Feng Shui. The Flying Star School not only takes into account the physical attributes, it also takes into account cycles of time.
