User Guide To Reflexology

Reflexology

Reflexology is an alternative form of medicine that uses points in the hands and feet in order to improve the general health of a person. Using a reflexology chart, the therapist is able to pinpoint a person's pain or illness anywhere in their body by applying pressure to the correct reflexology points.

The earliest forms of reflexology were discovered over 4,500 years ago in ancient Chinese and Egyptian cultures. It was also practiced in Japan towards the end of the 7th century. Reflexology gained popularity in western cultures between the 19th and 20th century.

How Does Reflexology Work

Reflexology is based on the principle that the nerve endings in the feet and hands correspond to the major organs and parts of the body. By applying pressure or massaging these points the health of these organs or body parts can be improved. A reflexology therapist will use charts known as reflexology charts to ensure that the right areas are being worked on. The charts divide the feet and hands into various zones, for example if the patient has pain in their lower back, pressure may be applied close to the heel of the foot.

During a reflexology session the therapist will massage the patient's hands and feet paying special attention to areas which indicate that excessive stress is being stored. Through the massaging of these points stress can be relieved which in turn reduces the chances of the person failing ill due to stress related illnesses such as hypertension, anxiety or cardiac diseases.

What are the Benefits of Reflexology

The main benefit of reflexology is its ability to reduce stress throughout the entire body. Other benefits of the treatment may include:

  • Relaxation
  • Reduction in pain
  • Improved blood flow
  • Easing pain associated with child birth

What to Consider Before Starting a Reflexology Treatment

Before a reflexology is started it is important to:

  • Find a therapist that is associated with groups such as the Reflexology Association of Australia.
  • Understand that reflexology is not used to cure specific ailments or diseases, it is a tool which allows the general health of the patient to improve.
  • Understand that reflexology should not be a complete replacement for other treatments, it should be used to compliment them.
