Maps & Imagery of Newsworthy Locations

People need maps to get around unfamiliar places. For navigation and exploration, maps are extremely important. The Babylonians were known to preserve their maps on clay tablets as far back as 2300 B.C. Up to Medieval times, maps were hand drawn so they were sometimes not so accurate.

When the printing press was invented, more uniform maps were produced but they were still not perfectly accurate. As technology improved, maps became more and more detailed. In recent years, maps can be updated and checked for accuracy with satellite imaging. A satellite in space takes an image of a place and cartographers can see if there have been any significant changes. In the age of the Internet, people can use satellite images to see how certain places appear without the need to travel there. For instance, they can see the deserts in Iran or the forests in South America.

Here are a few selected maps for newsworthy locales over the past few years.

The benefit of map sites is that you embark on a virtual escorted tour, with links to many additional resources and a view of the world that has only become available in this age of technology.
