The basic function of an axle in automotives is to transmit the force also know as torque - from the power source in order to rotate the wheels. There are two major types of axles: a live or drive axle that is driven by the engine, and a free-rotating type called the lazy or dead axle.

Drive axles have four sub-types: straight, tandem, split, and transaxle. Straight axles are commonly used on trains and heavy duty vehicles because it can keep the wheels in a steady position while bearing heavy loads. It is designed in such a way that it connects both the right and left side wheels on a single rigid shaft that makes it suitable to work under heavy stress. Some heavy duty trucks are even configured with two or more straight axles usually situated close together at the rear for a maximum support. This type of axle configuration is called the tandem type.

The split type on the other hand, has separate shafts attached on each wheel that are common to newer car models. The split type axles are effective in providing a smoother ride, and improved traction of tires. It is an ideal axle for formula cars as it allows the driver to operate the left and right drive wheels individually at different speeds.

Most front wheel drive automobiles now a days use transaxles, which is a combination of the transmission and drive axle in to a single unit; while its rear end has free-rotating type called the dead axle. Dead axles can either be a pusher, tag, or lift axles. Pushers are those located right in front of a drive axle, while tags are situated behind, which are steer enabled on some vehicles. Lift axles on the other hand has a weight distribution functionality often used on trailers.
