Number plates are used to officially identify a motor vehicle. It is usually made of metal or plastic and has an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies the vehicle within the issuing country or region?s database. It is usually unique within a country, but there are also others that are unique within a state such as in Australia.

Number plates are issued by the State or Territory government and are generally associated with a vehicle for the time it remains registered in a State. However, number plates may be replaced if the numbers have become unreadable. New number plates are usually issued when the vehicle is registered in another State or when requested by the owner depending on State laws.

Despite the different styles of number plates per State, many Australians still want to have their number plates customized. The owner of the vehicle will then have to pay extra money to have a set of numbers and letters of his or her choice, usually forming a recognizable line or abbreviation. Different customized number plates are subject to the law of each State and Territory.

Although various States offer customized number plates, there is an annual fee that needs to be settled to maintain the use of these plates. Most of the money collected from these fees are used for social and road safety activities for every State.

• New South Wales

NSW has 8 styles of plates and with the purchase controlled by the State government run Roads Transport Authority. The State has a one off and an annual fee associated with custom plates.

• Tasmania

Tasmania has a total of 47 styles of plates to choose from 9 categories. Custom plates are managed and issued by the State government and is a long term partnering agreement between the Tasmanian government and Licensys

• Queensland

Queensland has a total of 60 plate themes available at its website called PPQ (personalized plates Queensland) which is run by the State government.

• South Australia

Ezy Plates runs the customized number plate scheme in South Australia. It is a State government owned entity with over 10 categories to choose from.

• Northern Territory

Customized plates are run by the Motor Vehicle Registry of the Northern Territory government. There are only a few choices to choose from being a relatively small state. There is a form that needs to be filled out to order a customized number plate and the owner will not be able to see what is available unless contacting the Motor Vehicle Registry.

• Western Australia

Customized number plates are run by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure of the State government. It has around 10 plate categories that look pretty much the same.

• Victoria

The customized number plate website is run by Vic Roads and has a full range of colours, styles, and themes.

• Australian Capital Territory

Customized number plates are run by the Road User Services of the State government which offers a full range of colours and styles in either tin or plastic. Logos and slogans are also allowed but with additional fees.
