A Jet Ski, or properly known as personal watercraft (PWC), is a type of recreational watercraft that a rider may ride or stand rather than inside it. These personal watercrafts are built with pivoting handle poles used for recreational activities on water at high speeds. The riders may use PWCs for a variety of purposes that include towing surfers to waves and water skiers on flat water. PWCs are also known by other brand names such as WaveRunner and Sea-Doo.

PWCs are small, fast, easily handled, easy to use, affordable and safer for swimmers and marine life since it does not have any external propellers. However, it does cause serious orifice injuries to riders who fall or are ejected from their seats. Such injuries can occur from falling in the water at high speeds or from the high pressure jet of water from the output end of the pump jet. Drivers are relatively protected when using garments made out of strong, thick materials such as neoprene. Otherwise, the high pressure jet of water may penetrate any orifice it reaches.

• Solo craft. These are also known as stand-ups because they have no seats. It is harder to master and requires some control when riding.
• Sport craft. These can carry a rider and has a seat, which makes it different from a solo craft. They are easier to master and very maneuverable, but can be very unstable especially when making turns.
• Two-seaters. These PWCs are easy to use and relatively stable. It posses increased stability compared to the solo and sport crafts. However, they are not as fast as the previous two.
• Three or four-seaters. Very stable and very versatile PWCS. These crafts can be used for towing objects.

Tips when buying or renting a personal watercraft

• You must consider the size of the PWC. These crafts are generally designed to carry between one and four people or even tow an object behind it. You may want to consider the size of the craft and for what purpose you will be using it.
• Make sure that the PWC has a standard lanyard that is attached to a dead man's switch. It should turn off the ignition off should you fall off the craft during use.
• Consider the specifications of the PWC. The larger the engines of the PWC the more horsepower and more speed it produces. Shorter PWCs are faster and more maneuverable, but these are difficult to use for beginners. Longer and wider PWCs can carry more people, but it is less maneuverable.
