User Guide To Aerial Surveyors

Aerial Surveyors

Aerial surveys are conducted using a combination of techniques such as aerial photography and remote sensing imagery. This allows the surveyor to see things that are not visible to the naked eye. Using specialized equipment surveyors are able to see other bands of the electromagnet spectrum such as, ultraviolet, gamma and infrared.

Aerial surveys offer better quality and resolution than satellite imagery and can also capture atmospheric conditions. They can be particularly useful for:

  • Monitoring vegetation and agricultural growth
  • Tracking and monitoring wildlife
  • Land surveys
  • Archeology

Aerial surveys allow developers to get a good view of the entire project or land that they are dealing with. While aerial photography offers a number of advantages it also comes with a number of costs as well. Before conducting an aerial survey, specialized equipment needs to be arranged. The most obvious preparation is the procurement of a balloon, plane or helicopter with which to get airborne. If shooting a video it is imperative to use a gyro mount to stabilize the image. Other equipment would also be needed to conduct surveys or view ultraviolet, gamma or infrared images.

Aerial surveys should only be conducted by trained professional as it requires one to be familiar with the equipment and know what to look for. Unlike aerial photography, aerial surveys are only useful if all the proper data is captured. For this reason only professionals that have a proven track record should be trusted.

Things to consider:

Before taking a decision as to which aerial surveyor to work with it is very important to consider the following points in detail:

  • What are the qualifications of the surveyor and are they trained in using all the necessary equipment to ensure your survey is accurate
  • Understand the differences in the various bands of the spectrum to make sure the data you need is captured
  • Check if the surveyor is part of an association like the Association of Aerial Surveyors, Australia Inc
