"I highly recommend Irma. She has helped us so much with our very dominant and energetic Amstaf Lola. We couldn't take Lola anywhere. She would try to attack other dogs, jump all over people, not come when called, destroy the backyard. We almost gave up on her. Luckily, we found out about Irma through our vet and we now have a (mostly) well behaved dog that we can take everywhere with us, which is what we wanted as we are a very active family and wanted Lola to be a part of that. Most dogs live with people who want them to behave in pleasant ways that would keep their owners entertained and protected.
Dog training is a process of teaching a dog to perform tricks. The most effective way to train a dog is by giving treats and positive reinforcement. Methods of dog training involve basic obedience training to specialized areas such as law enforcement, military, search and rescue, hunting, working with livestock, assistance to people with disabilities, entertainment, and protection.
Basic pet obedience consists of six behaviors:
- Sit
- Down
- Stay
- Come/Here/In
- Loose-leash walking
- Heel
- Standing up without jumping
Basic dog training
- Basic training classes. Professional dog trainers train the owners of the dogs to train his or her dog. These classes are most effective when the dog is present during training so techniques can be used and reinforced. With regularly enforced rules, training can be successful.
- Advanced training classes. These classes are provided to dogs that have completed their basic training classes.
- Individual training. This training program is ideal for dogs that have unique training problems that are not suitable for group training such as aggressiveness and fear of certain situations.
Understanding and communicating with dogs
Training a dog takes time and patience. A command should always have a tone and a hand motion to make the dogs understand the command quickly. Clarity while demanding what a canine does is of great importance.
Dogs are very expressive and may show what they feel by barking, biting, whining or fidgeting. It is very important to understand the dog's needs and to communicate to the dog what behaviors are correct and what are undesirable. Using signals or words enables the dog to understand them more quickly.
Positive reinforcement can be anything that the dog finds rewarding such as food treats and toys.
