In 2008 a teacher and an occupational therapist teamed up to set up a service using the Integrated Listening System. Both Gillian and Jean shared a passion for helping others and the desire to provide a service of support and guidance to their clients and their families. They called their business Sound For Life
The Directors of Sound for Life, Jean Loth and Gillian Baker, have had many years of experience working with children and adolescents in both private practice, and the private and government education systems.
Sound for Life began by providing a clinic and home based service to provide the Integrated Listening System. This has since expanded to providing Occupational Therapy and Extra Lesson to children. Their vision is to have multiple services. They have tutoring and are currently exploring the possibility of Speech Pathology. Meanwhile they liaise and refer out to psychology, speech, counselling and Paediatricians. They see the teacher and the parents as part of the team and work closely to form the triad of support around their clients.
In 2010 they expanded their services to seniors and adults. (Clinic and home based) and had a school trialling the program also.
In 2011 Sound For Life participated in a world-wide research project on the effectiveness of the iLs focus on children with autism and sensory processing disorder. Link to results. This led to a second research project by the Spiral Foundation that validated that behaviour changes with the iLs and that the changes hold even after the program had finished. Link to research.
By 2014 Sound for Life had enough data to collate the results of their clinic based work with children and the school program. The results of the clinic based program was presented at the West Australian Occupational Therapy Association State Conference in October 2015 link to paper in SFL Projects
In 2016 Sound for Life presented their very early results of the work they had done with the Seniors program to the Integrated Listening Systems international Conference in Denver, Colorado, USA
iLs is the only auditory system that combines listening and auditory stimulation with movement and visual activities to address the symptoms of autism and learning difficulties. Our multi-sensory programs send information to users through multiple senses. As we repeat the stimulation, movement and brain activity, we begin to increase the brainâ€TMs ability to multi-task. Our programs have helped kids on the autism spectrum and with learning disabilities, as well as their parents, deal with their disorder in a fun and drug-free way.
Multisensory programs for kids with mental disorders.
iLs at home is fun and challenging and will help your child address symptoms of autism and learning difficulties.
iLs programs are available in-clinic with a therapist and can also be used at home or school. The iLs program has proved most effective when used 3-5 times each week, and it can also be used in combination with other types of therapies and programs. iLs has helped kids and adults deal with symptoms of various disorders including Autism and Developmental Difficulties and Learning Difficulties. Integrated Listening Systems (iLs), a form of sound therapy, uses filtered music with movement, to act on auditory processing, sensory processing, attention, and consequently on behaviour, anxiety and language.
The iLs programs play classical music that has been acoustically modified to provide enhanced or filtered signals in certain frequencies, as specific frequencies are believed to be correlated to certain brain functions. The music is loaded on an iPod paired with special headphones which deliver it through both air and bone conduction (a low volume vibration that is conducted by bone to the cochlea and vestibular system). Simultaneous to the auditory component, the user engages in visual, vestibular and motor exercises which maximise the interaction of the systems outlined in the above diagram.
It is non- invasive and can be used for children and adults.
