Whether it's diving, fishing, turtle watching, bird watching or just plain relaxing, the Mackerel Islands in Western Australia's northwest Pilbara Coastal region is the ideal destination for the adventurous or the weary.

The Mackerel Islands are situated 22km offshore from the town of Onslow, 1,400km north of Perth in Western Australia's spectacular Pilbara region. Accommodation is available on Thevenard Island and Direction Island.

Thevenard Island offers accommodation at either Club Thevenard Accommodation Village or in fully self-contained Beach Cabins. Club Thevenard is a re-furbished ex-mining camp. The 30-room accommodation village caters for up to 55 guests and features a spacious dining room and bar, pool and outdoor relaxation area. It caters for singles, couples, families and groups and is very popular with backpackers and diving groups. Please be aware that Club Thevenard is closed from November through to March.

Alternatively, 11 comfortable beachfront cabins really allow you to be at one with nature. Cabins vary from two to five bedrooms and are fully self-contained.

Thevenard Island has its own general store, which sells everything from tackle and bait, to alcohol and food basics. The island receives fresh fruit and veggies every week and there is a large communal freezer for successful fishers.

Fishing at the Mackerel Islands is something special. With so many different varieties of fish, the line action both onshore and offshore is what fishermen dream about. People come from all around Australia to experience the action and they rarely leave disappointed. Spanish mackerel, snapper, red and spangled emperor, queen fish, coral trout, yellow fin tuna, cod, sailfish and marlin are just some of the quality fish you are likely to catch. Whether you’re after the feed or the sport, there’s something for all. Many visitors bring their own boat but for those who don’t, fishing charters are available.

Midive offers dive charters from Thevenard Island. The vessel "The Specialist" is a 14m custom aluminium craft that can take groups of up to 10 divers. Thevenard One, an 8 meter LeisureCat is also available for dive charters and snorkel adventures. (more)
