Mark Cotterell is a high-end master jeweller/designer based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland where he established himself as a jeweller in 1976 and as independent jeweller in 1987. His national career as a master jeweller in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane has earned him a variety of awards that have positioned him among Australia's finest jewellery designers. His trademark style is precision settings of high quality diamonds and gems, framed by strong curves and lines with delicate adornments, each finely tuned to the owner.

Those who know Mark will be well aware of his acute attention to detail, (with astounding vision to .015mm, last time he looked), and an infallible sense of perfection. These characteristics may at times create challenges for Mark as a creator, however they are very much favoured by owners of his exquisite pieces, especially diamond ring and necklace designs.

Mark believes jewellery should be made to a standard and not to a price and doesn't expect that every piece should cost an exorbitant amount of money. His philosophy on jewellery is that a piece should 'fit' the person for whom it is intended. Mark frames this up by saying, "Jewellery is a symbol of people's emotions and represents a special moment in their life - for example an engagement or wedding ring. If I haven't met the person I'm designing a piece for - if it's a surprise - then I ask to see photos, profile the person and evaluate what makes them 'tick.' I then create the design concept specific to the receiver".

So what does a master jeweller do when he's not at the workbench designing and creating a lifetime gift? In Mark's case, it's fulfilling a need for speed as a 250 kmph racecar driver in his self-designed and built LeMans style sports racer. Mark's passion for precision and racecar driving has led him to design and produce a transaxle-style rear end casing that will mate up a motorcycle engine and gearbox unit into a racecar rear casing, a revolutionary replacement to traditional chain drive mechanisms. His design has been acknowledged by the racecar community and featured in Racecar Engineering Magazine.

New trends in designer jewellery have seen a growth in re-creating jewellery, either as 'freedom' pieces that represent a by-gone chapter in a life journey, or 'genesis' pieces that give new life and vibrance to tired jewellery items. People's lives change and modern trends show an increasing desire to renew the old. Mark's response to this is to create 'freedom' jewellery that says goodbye to ideologies that no longer serve us and to welcome new freedom.

Mark has re-launched his independent works in May 2010 and is constantly attracting positive feedback on his works and service. (more)
