In the 16 years from 1991 to 2007, 93 children drowned in residential in-ground and above-ground swimming pools in Queensland. That equates to an average of around five drownings each year.
Is is estimated that 50 young children present to emergency departments each year due to immersion injuries, some of whom will suffer permanent brain damage. Because of these statistics new pool safety laws were introduced on the 1st December 2009 and applies to new residential pools.
The final stage, stage 2, commenced on the 1st of December 2010 and mostly affects existing pools.
A Pool Safety Certificate must be obtained from a licenced pool fence inspector before selling or leasing a house with a pool.
The pool safety standard applies to all pools associated with houses, units, hotels, motels, backpacker hostels, caravan parks, mobile van parks and other forms of short-term accommodation.
