Yesterday, my Husband purchased two dozen oysters for $14 a dozen. They were quickly wrapped before he got to see them. When he got them home, they smelt, coloured yellow, drowning in a brown putrid juice and also were sitting in a gelatinous clear jelly. I have never seen Oysters like this in my whole life. I was quite upset by this – as we had spent nearly $30 on them so I took the oysters back the same night. When I entered the shop it was dirty, hot and stank. And not in a good seafood way. When I touched the fridges, they were warm! Warm fridges when selling seafood is a MUST NOT! I found this appalling. The boy behind the counter took one look at the oysters and then stated that he would have the owner contact me the next day...and then he took the oysters back... and put them back in the chiller for RESELLING without refunding me! The next day, I never received a call. So I decided to ring the owner myself. After ringing three or four times, he finally decided to call me back. When he did, he was not only rude and screamed at me over the phone but he said that he would not refund me as they were still good to eat and that no one had yet complained about that frozen batch he had been selling ALL YEAR! I said to him that I didn’t care what he did, as long as he gave me my money back and he refused to do so. I then said to him that would he be happy to eat those two dozen oysters raw ?? And he responded with "No I wouldn’t but they are still good to sell so I’m not giving your money back". So now, I have wasted $28 dollars on bad oysters, wasted petrol, time and the cost of phone calls in attempting to get my money back and all I have received is an abusive ear-full and confirmation that the owner would probably sell the bad seafood again and STILL make an additional $28 bucks off of someone else’s food poisoning. From here, I will be contacting the local Council, Consumer Affairs and also Dept for Health. That place needs to be closed down! Very disappointing to have this happen to me from a local small business. I mean, other locals have said to me that the shop was bad... but I didn’t realise it would be that bad. And with such rude staff. A very upsetting experience indeed.
