Inter-city ferry services typically operate on a scheduled basis, offer discounts for regular travelers, and relay cars and bikes as well as foot passengers across journeys.

Before embarking on a ferry, you may want to consider some or all of the following questions to get a better sense of the journey:

• What is the duration of the trip (one way)?
• Is an advance reservation required? Can reservations be made online?
• Does rough weather hamper the ferry's operations?
• Does the tour operator offer return tickets?
• Is the ferry suitable for people with mobility and limited access issues?
• Can you access your car during the crossing?
• Are pets allowed and if so, is there a cost associated for bringing pets on board?
• Does the ferry serve meals or have a restaurant or shop inside?
• What public transport options are available after disembarking from the ferry?
• Does the ferry meets all safety standards, carries lifeboats and lifejackets on board and is regulated by an organization such as the Australian Maritime Safety Authority?
• Is the ferry's crew experienced and trained in passenger conveyance and emergency situation handling?
