Ultimate Guide to Acupuncture Everything you wanted to know about acupuncture and some amazing resources
Dating back almost 5,000 years, acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of therapy know to man. Originating in China, acupuncture is the act of using pointed needles in order to regulate the flow of "qi" throughout the 14 meridians or energy channels located throughout the human body. "Qi" is the life force that separates the living from the dead and if its flow is disrupted the body is not able to work normally resulting in pain or illnesses.
There are many conflicting schools of thought when it comes to acupuncture; some believe that it is a placebo while others believe it to be a cure all. People seek out acupuncture for a number of reasons or ailments such as:
An acupuncturist uses multiple stainless steel needles which are between 0.18mm and 0.51mm in diameter. These needles are used to manipulate the flow of qi through one's body. Qi flows through 14 energy pathways called meridians. Depending on what aliment the patient suffers from, needles will be inserted at various points ranging from the neck, shoulders, arms and legs. Before starting the treatment the acupuncturist uses various indicators such as medical history, the patient's pulse, stiffness of the abdomen and color of the tongue to see how the energy is flowing in the patient's body.
The needles are then inserted into various spots on the body to help regulate and ease the flow of energy. While most of the needles are not painful some can feel a little tender depending on the part of the body they are inserted in.
