User Guide To Aromatherapy Products

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy takes advantage of natural oils that can reap physical and psychological benefits. While the name aromatherapy is an invention of the 20th century, it has been practiced for thousands of years. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian cultures used incense made from aromatic flowers and distilled oils from cedarwood, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Aromatherapy can help people in a number of ways including relief from physical pain, improving their moods and temporarily relieving their stress.

How Does Aromatherapy Work

The advantages of aromatherapy can be enjoyed in a number of ways such as:

  • Aerial Diffusion: Oils can be heated so that their vapors can fill up the room and in turn be inhaled
  • Direct Inhalation: This method is used for those that experience congestion or respiratory infections
  • Topical Application: Oils are directly massaged into the skin or can be added to bath water - this is especially useful for skin care

Chemicals found in various oils are used for specific ailments. By heating these oils their aroma is released which can cause the brain to trigger reactions such as helping a person relax or stay alert. Some oils and the suggested benefits include:

  • Lemon grass - calming and sedative
  • Rosewood - antiviral and vitalizing
  • Cinnamon - stimulates immune system
  • Rosemary - stimulates new cell growth

It is very important to remember not to apply the oils without first diluting them as they are very potent. It is important to make sure that the products you are using are 100% natural; a number of products may say they contain natural oils but fail to mention they also contain other synthetic ingredients.

What to do before Starting an Aromatherapy Treatment

Before you start any form of aromatherapy it is very important to:

  • Find out if the therapist is licensed or associated with any reputable associations such as The Australian Aromatic Medicine Association Inc.
  • Discuss your symptoms and pains with the therapist to ensure that proper oils are being used.
  • Check to see if all oils and products being used are natural.
