Bowen Therapy
Named after is creator Tom Bowen, Bowen therapy's origins are based in Australia. Taking advantage of the mind's ability to control muscles, the Bowen therapy uses gentle touches to reset your muscles in their natural position.
One of the main advantages of the Bowen technique is that is can be used for any person in any age group. Unlike a chiropractor or massage therapist that applies pressure, a Bowen therapist stimulates the nerve endings in the muscles to send messages to the brain. These messages tell the brain to reset the effected muscles so if a muscle is stretched or contracted it returns to its natural position.
Due to its gentle nature Bowen therapy can be used by the elderly, infants or people who have physical problems such as slipped disks.
How it Works
Unlike a regular massage which applies pressure to the sore or injured muscles, the Bowen technique uses gentle pressure by rubbing the fingertips or thumbs against the muscle. After each move a pause of 2 minutes is taken in order for the body to respond to the messages it is getting.
Generally the spine is chosen as the starting point. Once the spine is reset people find that their pain can shift from one part of the body to another. This ensures that the primary cause of the pain is being treated.
Bowen therapy has quickly been growing in popularity outside of Australia due to the fact that a majority of people who receive the treatment claim to have significantly reduced pain in just a few sessions. Bowen therapy is a holistic treatment and does not specifically diagnose a medical problem. Instead it focuses on the body as a whole to bring it back into a natural balance.
