User Guide To Carburetors & Fuel Pumps

A carburetor is a device that is responsible for internal combustion by blending air and fuel. It basically consists of an open pipe through which air passes into an inlet manifold of the vehicle's engine. The quantity of air/fuel mixture is controlled by a valve that is connected to the accelerator pedal of the car. Fuel is then mixed with the air stream through small holes or at other places where pressure is lowered.

Carburetors are based on Bernoulli's principle wherein the faster air moves, the lower its static pressure, and the higher its dynamic pressure.

A fuel pump is a device mounted outside the fuel tank that pumps fuel from the fuel tank to the engine and delivered to the carburetor under low pressure or to the fuel injection system under high pressure. Most cars these days use an electric fuel pump that is located inside the fuel tank.
One of the major causes of carburetor problems occurs when fuel evaporates inside. Over time, this leads to a gum-like substance that prevents the carburetors from operating properly. Problems occur when the needle gets stuck thus preventing fuel from flowing. Problems also occur when dirt or debris gets into the carburetor through the air intake and accumulates.

Not all vehicles are locally made and there are dealers that import and wholesale auto accessories and components to service the local automotive industry. Having said, asking about the guarantee before proceeding with the service would be an advantage. Most mobile business services offer a guarantee for new parts installed including labour. These services, parts and accessories are available from stores that specialize in automobiles and also from the retailer of the vehicles, which can be requested upon purchase.

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association is the peak body that is concerned with the manufacturing, re-manufacturing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing of all vehicle parts, accessories, tools, equipment and services.
5 easy steps to clean carburetor

  • Turn off the fuel valve and remove the carburetor completely from the engine by removing the air filter panel and disconnecting the governor and fuel line.
  • Open the carburetor and allow fuel to drain.
  • Check the needle if it is stuck. If it is, remove and clean it with a wire brush.
  • Spray carburetor cleaner or break cleaner into all the fuel lines and inspect for any buildup which may block proper flow.
  • Reassemble engine and test if it is functioning properly.

4 easy steps to replace a fuel pump

  • Release the pressure in the fuel lines by pulling the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box while the car is running to consume the last fuel pressurized in the lines.
  • Remove the pump that is enclosed in a black insulating sleep mounted directly under the car. Disconnect the bolts that secure it in place.
  • Disconnect all the wires that are attached to the pump and place it on a fuel catch to drain.
  • Remove the pump and install the replacement by doing this process in reverse.
