User Guide To Education Consultants & Tutors

An educational consultant is a person who helps the family in making educational decisions such as the choice of school for their children. An educational consultant may provide alternative options for parents who are having a hard time deciding the best school for their children. Education consultants are prohibited from accepting compensation from any educational institution for placement of a child. They may charge by the hour, a flat rate for specific services, or an annual contract agreed upon by the parents and the education consultant.

Education consultants need to be certified in order to provide service to parents. They are evaluated every few years to see if they have shown on-going professional development.
The Education Consultant Association of Australia is a nonprofit body that represents the interests of education consultants in Australia since 2010. It aims to provide professional development and training programs as well as technical support to all members.

Advantages of education consultants

  • Education consultants handle the large-scale or long-distance search for a kind of school that you want for your child.
  • An education consultant can determine if the school is not the best choice for your child.
  • Education consultants can act as middlemen for parents who do not speak English as their first language.

Tutors in Australia

A tutor is a person who is helps in the education of other people. A tutor is often a postgraduate student or a lecturer who is assigned to conduct a seminar for undergraduate students. A private tutor is a person who teachers a specific subject or skill to a single or group of students. They are often privately hired and paid by the student or the student's family. Tutoring may be done at home or any place conducive for learning. There are also tutorial centers where students go to learn instead of having a tutor come over.
Online tutoring is another way for a student to receive help from a tutor. Sessions are done through an application that was programmed for such activities where the student and tutor can communicate. Online tutoring has been gaining popularity due to the convenience it brings to the students.

Tips on getting the most out of a tutor session

  • Meet your tutor to meet you in a place where you are most comfortable. It can be in the library, in a cafe, or a park. You will be able to finish a lot more and learn more if you feel comfortable with your surroundings.
  • Always bring your notes and the necessary tools for learning such as books, class notes, a laptop or a calculator.
  • Always be on time for a tutor session and keep studying afterwards for maximum retention.
  • Do not be nervous when asking your tutor about something related to the lesson. He or she may be able to help you understand a point better than just keeping the question to yourself. Make your needs direct and do not waste time.
  • Tutors should never do your homework. They are there to help you understand and to learn, but not to write your paper or do your solution for you.
