A beauty school is an institution where a person is taught basic and advanced lessons in cosmetology as well as skin care, hairstyling, manicure and pedicure. A hairdressing college is a beauty school but it focuses more on hairdressing, styling and coloring than any other disciplines in cosmetology. Like most beauty schools, a hairdressing college requires their applicants to have a high school diploma. A full-time program may generally last between nine months to one year. Scholarships, grants and loans are also offered to applicants provided that they pass certain requirements of an accredited hairdressing college.
Beauty schools not only teach their students the basics of cosmetology, but they also teach them infection control and decontamination to make sure that their clients are served safely. They also learn about the basics of chemistry and anatomy as well as basic entrepreneurship and communication for students who wish to open their own beauty salons.
Hairdressing colleges have been training thousands of students since the early 1900s and have been training hairdressers and beauticians using modern and innovative teacher methods and materials to prepare them for work outside the college. Most hairdressing colleges have flexible schedules to accommodate their students. These colleges offer Certificate courses and most of them allow students to choose the time and days that they wish.
Accredited hairdressing colleges are equipped with proper facilities and equipment needed for training since it is very important for students to absorb a lot of information about the trade. Accredited hairdressing colleges also have licensed instructors to teach the students as required by the accrediting agency. Furthermore, accredited hairdressing colleges are more reputable and they give the students a chance to inherit that reputation which is needed when looking for a job after graduating.
