Teaching and encouraging students the right work ethic from primary all the way up to yr 12. Too often students want a tutor when it's almost too late. They have spent most of their schooling life with the wrong attitude and work ethic. A month or two before the HSC is too little, too late. 13 years of schooling cannot be learnt in such a short time.
A well rounded, self motivated learner often is not inbuilt. A child needs encouragement, stimulation and challenges that they can achieve otherwise they feel left out and lose interest. This is an ongoing life long journey that needs guidance. A child who finds work interesting is more likely to achieve closer to their potential. What that potential is, no one knows.
Keeping the class work interesting is my speciality, as is explaining the complex scientific and mathematical concepts in a way that is "Clear and Simple." As a teacher I translate the text book jargon and difficult concepts in a clear and precise manner. I've taught yr 11 work to year 8 students at the end of the year to encourage them, and they were a class who thought that they were not smart. A hard idea to break, unconscious low opinions are very hard to change. Takes a lot of time. I didn't tell them they were doing year 11 work. I didn't tell them what level it was at all. I talked up the topic and they became interested. They saw it as easy and liked the car factor (forces and motion) After the 2 week short topic I explained that they had begun the topic Motion and Forces in Year 11 Physics. They were amazed and held their heads high. Changing a child's low self opinion of themselves to someone proud and motivated to learn is a great reward.
This is the challenge of all teachers. Get the student involved, encourage, laugh with, be relaxed, motivate and inspire. At Keep it Simple Tutoring I lead by example, I get amazed at learning something new and students see and become relaxed (science is an amazingly large topic - look about you, everything is either made because of a science discovery or scientific technique or a part of science in some way). Science for Primary students is often overlooked by primary teachers without the expertise and training. Getting students enthused in science early helps them not to feel left out and be disadvantaged when they enter year 7.
