User Guide To Swimming Lessons & Schools

Swimming lessons is the process of learning how to swim with the assistance of a swimming instructor. In swimming schools, there is a definition of a number of swimming levels that is reached as the student progresses through the curriculum. Swimming tests are then given to the students to determine whether they have progressed or not and for further training in aquatic abilities. It is recommended that children do not swim independently until they reach the age of four.

Swimming schools are places where swimming lessons are provided. They are always equipped with at least one swimming pool to accommodate the students in their learning through practical application. Many schools that have swimming pools also offer swimming as part of their physical education curricula to improve the aquatic abilities and techniques of the students as well as their confidence when in water.

In swimming schools, standard everyday clothing is deemed impractical for swimming and may even be unsafe. Most swimming schools require their students to wear swimsuits during class hours.? Men?s swimsuits are usually briefs or shorts that either skintight or loose fitting. These usually cover the upper legs with the upper body left uncovered. For women, swimsuits are skintight and are either two pieces covering only the breasts and the pelvic region such as a bikini, or a single piece covering these areas and the torso between them.

Swimming lessons often include swimming styles that a student can learn and master in time. A style is also called a ?stroke? and may also refer to a single completion of a sequence of body movements repeated while swimming in the given style. For recreational swimming, it is often preferred to use a style that keeps the head out of the water and has an underwater arm recovery such as breaststroke, side stroke, and dog paddle. Other styles that are taught include freestyle or butterfly which uses the difference in resistance between air and water for faster swimming speeds.

There are a number of swimming schools in Australia. One may be able to find a list on the internet with many of them providing relevant information.

Tips on choosing the right swimming school or instructor

  • There are a number of places to look for a good swimming instructor. You may ask friends for their recommendations. This allows you to hear first-hand experience about a particular swimming school or teacher.
  • You may visit your local swim club or search on the internet for any good schools and instructors out there and get all the information you need.
  • When you have a couple of instructors lined up, it is advisable to sit down and talk with them individually so that you may be able to ask questions. You should be able to understand the type of experience they possess for teaching you or your child to swim.
  • Ask the swimming instructor how long the lessons will take and how many lessons they would recommend. Another question to ask is how the instructor will be assessing you during your swimming lessons.
  • Consider the costs of hiring a private swimming instructor as opposed to going to a swimming school.
