Dyslexia symptoms vary from person to person, but some common symptoms include reversal of letters, missing out lines or words when reading, poor concentration, difficulty reading and/or writing, headaches/tiredness and general poor self image.

Dyslexia is the result of a small treatable eye problem that often goes unsuccessfully treated. Many people suffer needlessly from this condition which can lead to difficulties at school and, at times, behavioral issues.

At The Alison Lawson Centre-Blue Mountains a very successful medically based treatment is available that deals with the cause of dyslexia, which is an unsteady fixation of the macula in one eye. As the brain can't deal with this moving point of focus, it lays down heavy suppression in the visual cortex for that eye. An initial assessment is performed to determine if the treatment can be beneficial and if so the program involves 10 sessions at the centre using the LASD (Lawson Anti Suppression Device) which deals with the suppression. The treatment is augmented by homework, eye exercises and remedial work which enhances the patients ability to achieve steady fixation in the affected eye, improves focusing and binocular vision, and increases their skill in reading and writing which leads to improved confidence. Another side benefit is an improvement is their ability to play sport.

The treatment is non-invasive and can be performed over a period of ten weeks of one 1 hour session per week, or if time is an issue, over two weeks of one 1 hour session per day. Other variations are also available, so please discuss your needs when you contact the Centre.

The treatment, once completed, is successful in removing the cause of the dyslexia problem so that there is then no reason for the patient to be held back from going forward to achieve all that they are capable of in their schooling and beyond: whatever that is for each individual. It is very exciting to see the change in their motivation to go on.
