Confused? So were we.... Foothills conference centre has an identity issue. I am sure during the ...week it's a great location for conferences, but given it is advertising itself as a 'romantic getaway weekend destination', not having any staff at the facility on the weekend makes it extremely difficult to believe. Albeit we were there on a voucher from Getaway, our first impression was that of a school camp. The place was badly signposted, was a labyrinth of driveways and car parks, and we were told firmly on arrival that the only staff member would be there until 8pm. It may have well been thirty degrees outside, but the venue itself lacked any warmth. On a Friday night, we were given our keys and a list of set hour times slots for dinner and breakfast and left to our own devices. The saving grace for the room was a HUGE king size bed, but it did not make up for the fact that furniture was missing, the inhouse room information was wrong (the restaurant and bar were not open at all given it said 11pm) and rooms were not even serviced. The property hadn't been given any love for a long time. Lights were broken, the showers times were restricted and the accommodation and surrounds were showing a lack of care and attention. Our car park, right outside our room, contained a derelict shipping container, a rusted broken pergola and guests had to resort to hanging out their towels outside their rooms - always a nice look! If you are looking for ambience, you won't find it here. Foothills is a purpose built venue for weekday conferences, but its obvious its trying to broaden its reach by bringing in revenue via weekend guests. That 's ok, but taking people's money and not providing them with any services or making them feel welcome is just poor. There were plenty of guests on the weekend we were there and plenty of opportunity for further revenue from the bar/cafe/pool, but no one was even around to acknowledge our existence let alone see for themselves what might be needed. All up, it's not a bad place, its just not what it purports to be or what you would expect from basic serviced hospitality. Sorry Foothills, but we won't be back and we won't be singing your praises to anyone anytime soon.

Garden Tuscany is a real find. Tucked away in a laneway off Puckle Street, you step into a warm and ...welcoming garden, oozing with Tuscan charm. I visited with a friend and we brought our young pre-schoolers with us who were made to feel very welcome. Our children quickly declared the cafe 'so beautiful', and happily demolished their pizza before eyeing dessert. The desserts were very tempting. My friend and the children enjoyed the churros with dipping chocolate, while I couldn't resist the home made chocolates as the perfect sweetener with my coffee. Garden Tuscany is a special place, and combines a gorgeous environment with a relaxed and friendly ambiance. It will no doubt quickly become a firm favourite with the locals.
