Alex Nelson is a Barrister based in Brisbane. The focus of his practice as a Barrister is family law, criminal law and commercial litigation. In addition to his work in Brisbane, Alex is available to accept family law briefs to appear in the Federal Magistrates Court circuits in Lismore, Port Macquarie, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, and Coffs Harbour. He is also available to accept criminal law briefs in the District Court circuits throughout Queensland.

Alex's particular interests are in:

* Taxation offences;
* Fraud offences;
* Defamation law;
* Family law contravention proceedings;
* De facto family law property; and
* Negotiating or arguing for parenting orders.

Alex was first admitted to practice as a lawyer in New South Wales in 1998
He was enrolled as a Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1999
He was enrolled as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2010

Alex's first role as a lawyer was in the Australian Regular Army as a Legal Officer.
After resigning his commission, he continued as an Army Reserve Legal Officer for several years while he worked at Roberts Liu & North, a Townsville firm of solicitors (now Roberts Nehmer McKee) where he undertook work in the general commercial and property law fields followed by Suthers Taylor Lawyers in Townsville where he undertook work in commercial litigation. Alex then went on to establish his own firm in Townsville where he undertook, and supervised several employed solicitors in, family law, criminal law and commercial litigation for 8 years before being called to the bar in Brisbane in 2010.

Alex has:

* Obtained acquittals in numerous defended criminal trials;
* Obtained bail for defendants charged with serious offences where bail was opposed;
* Successfully defended confiscation proceedings;
* Successfully negotiated the reduction of many criminal charges to lesser offences;
* Achieved some outstanding results in criminal law sentencing proceedings where clients received substantially lower sentences than those expected by the crown and the clients themselves;
* Appeared in successful criminal and civil appeals;
* Negotiated many life changing family law agreements;
* Successfully prosecuted and defended family law contravention applications;
* Successfully opposed and prosecuted domestic violence protection orders;
* Undertaken the independent children’s lawyer course conducted by the family law section of the law council of Australia; and
* Undertaken work as duty Lawyer in the Magistrates Court in Townsville.
