Uttam London was founded over 10 years ago by Uttam Nepal, who in 1994 was selling knitwear from his home country of Nepal, in London's popular Camden Market. The fashion for hand-made ethnic clothing and bags made his collection increasingly popular towards the end of the 1990s and his brand enjoyed considerable growth.

Uttam clothing acquired a reputation for its vibrant colours, hand-stitched embroidery, and creative embellishments using beads, sequins and jewels, and became widely recognised for its eye-catching women's wear, children's wear, and accessories with local, national, and international customers. The continued growth and success of the brand led to the development of the Uttam Direct website, and the launch of the stylish new Australian Yumi Direct site.
