BWS (Beer Wine Spirits) began operations in June 2001 as a local neighborhood bottleshop. BWS is a brand of Woolworths Freestanding Liquor Division, which also includes the Dan Murphy's brand. The Freestanding Liquor Division of Woolworths is distinguished from Woolworths Liquor and Safeway Liquor stores (Victoria), in that it stands alone from Supermarkets. The first BWS was opened in Cabramatta, New South Wales, the site of a Woolworths owned Mac's Liquor Store.

As of May 2012, BWS has nearly 750 stores Australia wide, a majority including the ALH Group sites.

In 2012, Woolworths Liquor and BWS have started to share all promotions, prices and specials between the two brands. A first step towards re-branding all Woolworths Liquor stores (excluding those located in the Northern Territory) to BWS and separating them from the supermarket chain. These stores will operate as freestanding stores, but may still be attached to Woolworths Supermarkets. (more)
