HACK architecture is a exciting young design based practice, located in Newcastle, Australia. Our underlying focus is on sustainable building design within residential and small scale commercial projects.
A central idea to achieving a sustainable outcomes is this through adapting and reusing existing buildings to accommodate todayâ€TMs needs and lifestyles. As the pressure placed on the housing requirements of our cities grow, we must seek new answers beyond the urban sprawl that is so prevalent today. At HACK architecture we are excited by the possibilities that the existing built environment has to offer. We seek to edit the code to create a new environment compatible with a sustainable lifestyle for today and into the future.
Of cause the first question we often get is why HACK?
This name directly borrows from the IT world the notion of â€oeHacking” and apply this to architecture. What does this mean to architecture I hear you ask, HACK has a keen focus on adapting existing building to suit the current day needs, thus editing or in some cases nearly rewriting future of an existing building or space.
The understanding of HACK also extends to the irreverence of hacking. Here at HACK we have no interest in upholding the status quoe.
HACK pursues a design processes that is open to research, exploration and experimentation to find the best a solution suited to each unique set of conditions of each project.
Collaboration is a given at HACK. The first and foremost collaborator is the client, without the input from external sources architecture runs the risk of being simply sculpture. The question of sustainability is not treated as an add-on, but as inherent part of what we do and how we approach design. Put simply good design is inherently sustainable.
We adopt the old adage of reduce, reuse, recycle in this order, thus the reason to â€oehack” the existing building stock to create the new. HACK is about the regular person on the street. Good design and architecture is not for just for the elite classes of our society. HACK pursues the practice architecture with rigour and uses research and design skills to produce real world architecture that is accessible by those who desire it. HACK is of the belief that great ideas are useful, but come to nothing without excellent execution.
