About

Experience the wonder of Chinese Relaxation Music

Blue Butterfly is the personal project of accomplished Chinese musician, Shi Lan. Blessed with a strong musical lineage and privileged upbringing, Shi Lan's music is a rich tapestry of traditional Chinese instruments, utilising the profound simplicity of the Yang Ch'in (Chinese dulcimer), Erhu (Chinese violin), Guzheng (Chinese Harp) and the Dizi (Bamboo Flute) to create truly beautiful and relaxing musical melodies that kindle a powerful sense of peacefulness and tranquillity. As a true testament to Shi Lan's extraordinary talents, her music has captured the attention of the most distinguished musical academies in the world, culminating in a performance for the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra.

Benefits of Relaxation Music

Relaxation music offers many positive benefits to a person's well being. It helps to relieve the burden of ordinary everyday stress and also acts as a vitally important natural supplement in treating more serious conditions such as anxiety and depression. Shi Lan's soothing and harmonious musical melodies invoke a sense of calm and blissfulness, helping to conquer tension, fear and the inevitable implications that both of these afflictions entail, allowing the mind to have the freedom of focus once more.

Instruments

Shi Lan's captivating and inspiring relaxation music draws upon the soothing sounds of many traditional Chinese instruments including:

Yang Ch'in (Chinese Dulcimer) - believed to have originated from Persia (modern day Iran) around 5000 years ago, the Yang Ch'in was first introduced to China at the beginning of the 19th century. It is a stringed instrument that involves striking the strings delicately with a small mallet to produce a sound. The sound produced by the Yang Ch'in varies depending on the material used for the mallet and whether or not the mallet is covered with a fabric or such to soften the sound.

Erhu (Chinese Violin) - said to have originated during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Erhu's manufacture, playing techniques and instrument variations have all seen remarkable development since the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Like a western violin, sound pitches are created with the Erhu by touching different positions along the neck of the instrument. Just as the violin does in Western Orchestras, The Erhu often plays a prominent role in all Chinese National Orchestras.

Guzheng (Chinese Harp) - thought to have been invented during the Qin Dynasty (897-221 BC), the Guzheng is a plucked-string instrument - similar to a harp, that is renown worldwide for the uniquely beautiful sound that it produces. Like the Erhu, the Guzheng has undergone many changes since its inception and there are now numerous ways in which the instrument is played.

Dizi (Bamboo Flute) - although first discovered in China as far back as a staggering 9000 years ago, the Dizi is a traditional Chinese instrument that first rose to prominence during the 5th century BC. There are two main variations of Dizi; the Bangdi, a shorter flute which is known for its strong tones and the Qudi, whose sound is far more subtle and softer than that of Bangdi.

THE MUSIC

Shi Lan's music covers a wide expanse of musical genres, from traditional to classical. Her highly emotive melodies and spellbinding artistry make her music ideal for relaxation, reading, Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation.
