We all know drinking water is good for us. And new research from the University of Illinois has found that drinking just 1 percent more tap water reduces how much sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol we consume.

The study of more than 18,000 American adults discovered that people who added between one and three cups of plain water each day consumed between 68 and 205 fewer calories each day!

They also decreased their sodium intake by up to 235 milligrams, sugar by 18 grams, and cholesterol by up to 21 milligrams. That's a pretty dramatic decrease for something as simple as drinking one extra glass of water a day.

The impact of plain water intake on diet was similar across race/ethnicity, education and income levels and body weight status. This finding indicates that it might be sufficient to design and deliver universal nutrition interventions and education campaigns that promote plain water consumption in replacement of beverages with calories in diverse population subgroups without profound concerns about message and strategy customization, said Professor Ruopeng An from the university.

How was the study carried out?

As part of the study, An looked at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in which people recorded what they ate and drank.

Interestingly, just a 1 percent increase in participants? daily water intake was attributed to an 8.6-calorie decrease in their daily energy intake.

What this shows is the importance of drinking plenty of water for general health and well-being. And thankfully, it doesn't mean we have to start guzzling liters and liters of water each day. Just an extra glass or two can work wonders.
