Here's how I see it.

Traditional marketers and small business owners are wedded to the past. What worked then, and what works now, are not necessarily the same thing.

You see, the world has changed. Irreversibly. We ain't going back. This is the new world. Look at what's been happening:

1. Customers Are More Demanding

2. Customers Are Less Loyal

3. Customers Drive a Hard Bargain

4. Customers Are More Cynical

So if it is true and it is that customers are harder to please and more price conscious, what is the bottom line?

Bottom line is this:

Because they don't trust anyone, and because they want the 'best price', they have embraced the new media with gusto. What? Yep, they've become internet junkies. Have you?

They use the internet to do their research, to educate themselves and to find good deals. They're maniacs for using Google and other search engines to find products and services at the click of a mouse button.

So that's what the customers are doing. They are flocking to the internet in massive numbers but most small business owners are sleeping.

What are typical small business owners doing? Not much. Many still don't have a website. Or if they do, it sucks. Most do not 'show' for a given search term in their niche.

Imagine this someone is looking to buy a 'widget'. They type in 'widget' and what comes up? Sponsored links (advertising) and organic (free) searches. Does your business show up under the free searches on page 1?

Maybe it doesn't show because the search term is too broad. Let's narrow it down a little. What if someone types in 'Brisbane widgets', Does that give your site a better chance of being seen? Yes, but unless you've got a ranking strategy in place the chances are slim that it will.
