Firstly, I am in no way affiliated with West Torrens Dog Obedience. I took my boy there after attending another dog school which only used positive re-enforcement. I found over 6 months that my dog became “ratty”& very disobedient. He was also showing signs of having issues towards other dogs. I went to West Torrens dog obedience on a recommendation of another dog owner. After the first weeks training, my dogs attitude toward myself & other dogs completely changed. We WERE given the option of what collars we wanted to train our dogs with. It was also explained the difference between a slip chain & choke chain (& other training aids WERE on sale!). I “chose” to use a slip chain & in no way was my dog hurt or anyway affected by the collar. Most of the training relies on verbal commands & not food, which was used extensively by the other school. Before attending this school, my dog was only food oriented, & if I didn’t have food on me, he would totally ignore my commands! We did use a lot of praise toward the dog in the form of patting & using our voice. The socialising was also great as it wasn’t like a dog park where dogs run a mock, but controlled which has allowed my dog to settle around other dogs & people. We also went through a lot of issues that most people have (jumping up, barking etc.) & that helped greatly. I only did 1 course & that was more than enough for my dog & it is very thorough (far more than the other dog school which I attended for a year!) It sounds like Mary G has sour grapes & I would recommend these guys any day!
