The input that Pathfinder® requires is the client’s current situation and goals plus investments recommended by the financial planner. From this input, the software’s dynamic cash flow modelling works out the best strategy – year by year – to reach the client’s goals and maximise their financial outcome.

Pathfinder®’s dynamic cash flow modelling is based on proven mathematical optimisation techniques. Rather than just being a projection tool where each transaction needs to be manually driven, the optimisation moves money to where it’s needed based on the client’s input data and their goals, while keeping within any government legislation. The optimisation techniques work out the best result given the data and assumptions, so the only adjustments that need to be made are in relation to mitigating risk or the client’s personal preferences. For example, it isn’t necessary to tweak the amount that is salary sacrificed, to see if it will give a higher final portfolio value, because Pathfinder®’s optimisation has already explored all the possibilities and calculated the best amount to salary sacrifice.

The computing power of Pathfinder® also means that it can handle a fine level of detail while also taking into account the entire strategy. For example, it can find the best balance between directly owned assets and an SMSF while also accounting for transition-to-retirement and working out whether any loan repayments should be above the minimum. The output of Optimo Pathfinder® is a comprehensive set of reports that not only illustrate the strategy and its outcomes, but also provide a paper trail to prove that the strategy is compliant and within government legislation. It is also possible to run several scenarios for comparison.
