My elderly dad has been a regular patient at this hospital for quite a while with failing lungs, heart and kidneys. He has been admitted and discharged a number of times in the past 6 months. His most recent stay ended on Thursday May 14. The way he was treated was nothing short of disgraceful. Although his body had failed him, his mind had not and when he left on Thursday he was relieved beyond belief. The reasons - he had been forced and held under a stone cold shower and force fed cold food when he said he wasn't hungry. As his health deteriorated, family members inquired if the doctors had seen him. The response? "Yes they have but we don't know what was said because we didn't take notes"!!! The other thing of interest - a Webster pack of medications was provided along with loose meds. There was no change to the numbers when dad left on a previous occasion!!! He had insisted on a couple of occasions that he wasn't receiving his meds and we didn't listen. When I visited for a meeting to arrange Nursing Home care, dad was wheeled to a meeting room and his oxygen connected. When the meeting was over, I went to the nurses' station to ask for someone to disconnect the oxygen and reconnect it back in his room. The woman I asked spoke to me like I was something she had stepped in and told me "to go and look for his nurse" How the hell was I supposed to know who his nurse was? I could find no one in sight and so disconnected and reconnected myself - 35 years of nursing came in handy but I should not have had to do it. On the other hand, he could have been there for hours if I had not as I never did sight a nurse. Dad passed away last night at Bupa Nursing Home where the staff cared for him with compassion and treated him with dignity. I would never subject my worst enemy to this hospital. There is absolutely no excuse for the way dad was treated. The staff need to stop congregating and gossiping at the central nurses station and start doing what they are paid to do.
