These are a new type of financial services professional created through the Tax Agent Services Act 2009. They are in fact bookkeepers who have the necessary qualifications to be able to prepare BAS statements.

But for a BAS agent to register they don't just have to hold certain qualifications that are recognised. They must have at least 1,400 hours of experience working in this field. They also need to have taken out professional indemnity insurance. Plus they will need to continue undergoing training along with being able to fulfil other conditions.
