About

Adelaide is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located to the immediate north of the central business district. Were it not for the River Torrens, it is probable that Adelaide would never have been partitioned from the CBD. When Colonel Light conducted the original survey of the land for Adelaide, 342 acres fell on the northern bank of the Torrens. For the sake of simplicity, Adelaide was declared an independent suburb. As the suburb was planned by Light and his men, it has the same rectilinear layout as the city. Adelaide consists of three 'grids,' each arranged to fit the topography of the land.

Being so close to the city, Adelaide is dotted with a number of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Melbourne Street and O'Connell Street both boast an impressive range of eateries and retail stores and are busy during summer months. The primary drawcard of Adelaide is the Adelaide Oval, the city's premier sporting arena. Many consider the oval to be among the most picturesque in the world, however recent redevelopment has largely destroyed the heritage aura of the ground.

The Adelaide Oval was built in 1871 and has hosted almost all international cricket fixtures played in Adelaide since. Originally the Oval had different proportions to many of the other cricket and football grounds in Australia, being longer and narrower. The abnormal dimensions were the result of a cycling track that once ran around the ground but were standardised during the redevelopment. At one end of the ground is a manually operated Edwardian era scoreboard surrounded by a grassed area or 'Hill'. The scoreboard occupies cult status in South Australia, largely due to its location in the part of the ground patronised by the heaviest drinking spectators. In 2013, the Oval was redeveloped to make way for AFL football.
