November 15 to 21 marks Skin Cancer Action Week in Australia an annual initiative led by the Cancer Council and Australasian College of Dermatologists to raise awareness of skin cancer and melanoma.

Incredibly, two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer before they turn 70. Yes, two in three. Those are statistics that just can't be ignored.

So we all have to be sun smart, and keep informed about sun protection and early detection.

What's the week all about?

This year, the theme of Skin Cancer Action Week is UV. It all adds up.? Many Australians seek the sun without any protection. And all that UV radiation can add up and result in skin cancer.

Consider this over 2000 people die from skin cancer in Australia each and every year. But we can avoid most of these by adopting healthy sun protection habits.

How to reduce your risk

The Cancer Council offers some excellent and easy tips for being sun smart:

Slip on a shirt Slap on a hat Slop on broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen Wrap on sunglasses Stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm Seek shade wherever possible Get checked for melanoma regularly, especially if you have moles that change

These simple steps will reduce your risk of developing skin cancer during your lifetime.
