We've all heard of turf wars and most of us prefer to stay out of them. If you're contemplating installing a lawn, there is one (non-violent) turf war you should jump into, though. It's the "war"between real and synthetic turf. Let's take a look at the case for each of them.

Real Turf: Pros and Cons

We all love the look of a freshly cut lawn and for lawn lovers, having anything but real turf can seem almost sacreligious. How could any manufactured, plastic lawn compare to the real thing? Isn't there enough plastic in the world already? Why on earth would anyone who loves the environment choose anything but natural turf

Although it sounds counter-intuitive, the major drawback to real turf is the fact that it is a naturally growing plant that requires regular watering and maintenance. Many parts of Australia suffer from drought conditions or have a shortage of water because of increased demands on available water supplies.

Lawn mowers are usually powered by petrol and herbicides and pesticides are used on lawns to keep weeds and pests at bay. While grass does occur naturally, the fact that we have to use polluting petrochemicals to keep our lawns alive and healthy suggests having real turf isn't necessarily a "natural" alternative.

Synthetic Turf: Pros and Cons

"But it doesn't look real!" is one of the biggest complaints made about synthetic turf. Actually, today's synthetic turf can look so real, you mistake it for natural turf. It's only when you see a cheap "fake lawn" that you notice the difference. Today's synthetic turf is made in a variety of blade lengths and thicknesses and colors can be identical to the colors of different natural turf varieties.

On the downside, synthetic turf is, well, synthetic. We wouldn't want to have a garden entirely made out of plastic and installing a synthetic lawn can seem like the first step in that direction. It doesn't have to be seen that way, though. Many homeowners see it as a floor covering for the outdoors. They install it in heavy traffic areas or in places where a lawn would enhance the appearance of their garden, but require too much maintenance and water.

And the Winner Is

The only winner in the real vs. synthetic turf war other is the one you choose to install. Either can be a great choice. Just keep water usage and maintenance in mind when making your decision and you won't regret your choice.
