Ballet is a kind of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century. It was further developed in other countries such as France, Britain and Russia. A ballet performance is accompanied by classical music and has become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary.
A ballet school is an institution where the dance is learned and perfected. Ballet schools have sprung flooring which provides a degree of flexibility to absorb the impact of intensive jump exercises and to promote good health and safety. One common feature of a ballet school is the presence of a barre in every studio. It is a stationary handrail that is used for ballet warm up exercises. Another common feature is mirrors on the walls of the studio.
Music is a vital part of learning ballet dances and almost all schools have their own sound system for playing music. Most professional ballet schools have their own piano for musical accompaniment for all dance classes.
The Register of Cultural Organisations under the Office of the Arts of the Australian Government assists qualifying bodies such as ballet schools to attract support and strengthen the nation's cultural life. Ballet schools receive tax deductable donations from private sectors for their activities and theatrical work.
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is the government agency that leads the country's education and workplace training as well as transition to work. It collaborates with the different government agencies with the states and territories to provide easy access to educational services and support programs to the Australian people. It also aims to increase workforce participation and promote fair work practices in Australia.
Tips for choosing a good ballet school
- Visit a ballet school in person and do not rely on internet searches. Try to set an appointment with the school staff and observe their classes as well as their facilities. This would give you a good idea of how much care they put on developing relationships with their students through their dance classes.
- A good ballet school will have a structured program for each level and some form of evaluation to see if the students have attained the skills needed to move to the next level.
- A good ballet school will establish the student's proper technique first and foremost before devoting their time preparing for the annual school recital or other competitions.
- A good ballet school will have qualified teachers and instructors to assist in the growth and development of their students. They should be able to expand the students' abilities and challenge self-awareness.
- Special flooring is essential to minimizing the risk of injury on the dance floor. The studio should always use sprung flooring that is well-cushioned and non-slip.
- The costs of learning in a ballet school should be made available to you before enrolling. Try to compare the costs of different ballet schools. Do not always choose the cheapest program available since it does not always equate to a positive outcome.
