Osteopathy is a ‘whole body’ system of manual medicine base on unique biomechanical principles to treat musculoskeletal problems and other functional disorders of the body. It was developed in the 1870’s by an American physician, Dr Andrew Taylor Still. Unsatisfied with medicine of the day, Dr Still recognised the body to be equipped with everything necessary to heal itself and in doing so derived four principles on which to base treatment.
The key principles encompassing the philosophy of Osteopathy are:
• The body is a single unit of mind, body and spirit
• Structure and function are interrelated
• The body is capable of healing and regulating itself
• Treatment is based on the above three principles
Osteopathic treatment is non-invasive and incorporates a holistic approach whereby the entire body is examined, not just the area of dysfunction. The expansive range of hands-on techniques means that it is safe and gentle enough for everyone; from a newborn baby through to the elderly. In fact Osteopathy is recognised as one of the most effective and scientifically valid complementary therapies. Osteopaths look for somatic dysfunction within the body, a scientifically proven concept recognised by the World Health Organisation and unique to Osteopathy. Somatic dysfunction describes the impaired or altered function of the body framework and all its associated parts including muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, connective tissue and organs.
