Feminist Book Shop 7.33 km

Shop 9, Orange Grove Plaza, Lilyfield, NSW, 2040

The Feminist Bookshop was started in 1974 at Eastwood, by June James and Julia Sugden. They were responding to the surge of interest in the Women’s Liberation Movement, and women’s need for books about themselves. Very quickly the bookshop became a center of interest for women, and within a few years moved to inner-west Balmain. In 1982 the bookshop was taken over by three sisters, Gail Hewison, Libby Silva, and Jane Waddy, and moved to its present location at Lilyfield. In the 80s and 90s and in a larger space, the bookshop quickly expanded as an important resource and information center. Extra women were employed and regular launches, readings, and literary events were held. Via booklists and newsletters the bookshop began to develop a huge mail-order business, and now sends books all over Australia, and to regular customers in Japan, Fiji, Malaysia, and Singapore. In 2011, Jo Angri and Caterina Giuliano have taken over The Feminist Bookshop and catapulted it into the 21st century. Many of the systems are now online and recently the launch of the Online Store sees You able to shop from the comfort of your home/office @ http://feministbookshop.com/the-feminist-bookshop-store Regular customers include community centers, sexual assault centers, hospitals, schools, jails, counsellors and therapists, family services, Aboriginal health centers, and men’s groups, as well as locals who enjoy a good read. The local children are also nurtured with Baby Bookclubs and Writing Workshops. The bookshop’s concept is that feminism is about all issues of importance in society, all issues affecting the family, such as incest/child abuse, domestic violence, relationships, and parenting skills. These days books on politics and women’s studies take up just a small section of the shop, while a large space is given to self-help, personal development, and living skills, as well as great fiction. The atmosphere at the shop is friendly and welcoming, and the book selection is amazing and inspiring. Only 3-years shy of 40 years of age, The Feminist Bookshop enjoys a longevity that would be coveted by any business. Many women’s bookshops around the world have closed down in recent years, but The Feminist Bookshop goes from strength to strength as one of Sydney’s most loved independent bookshops.
