User Guide To Billiard Tables

Billiard sports or more generally called as cue sports is defined as a game of skills that is normally played with sticks, which are used to strike or move small balls, making them roll around a fabric-furnished table bounded by rubber cushion.
Billiards is generally divided into three types:

  • Carom Billiards, sometimes called as carambole is the generic title for all billiard games that are being played on pocket-less tables.
  • Pocket Billiards or simply pool is any billiard game that is being played on a six pocket table. Pocket billiard games include eight-ball, nine-ball, ten-ball, straight pool, one-pocket and bank pool. As an established sports, pocket billiards is internationally governed by World Pool-Billiard Association or WPA.
  • Snooker, the third billiard type, technically belongs to the pocket billiard games. However, due to its relatively unique cultural roots and usage of different terminologies that make up its game, it is set apart as a new type of cue sports.

Aside from its complex family tree, billiards also possesses one of the most complex sports equipment when it comes to material integration, and that is the billiard table.
The following are some of the things that you should consider doing to ensure the quality of the billiard table you are going to purchase:

  • Examine the table surface closely. Other than the outermost covering of the playing surface, which is the felt, you should also check the quality of the slate that lies immediately underneath the felt. Assuring that these layers are made with the finest materials will guarantee you in return that the playing surface of your billiard table would remain flat and free from any slightest bulges. Furthermore, the playing surface should be free of any scratch and tear. With this quality, the motion of the billiard balls will not be interrupted.
  • Check whether the felt is made from quality worsted wool. The higher the quality, the more durable your felt will be.
  • Test the strength of the cabinetry. This is the wood frame that houses the felt and the slate. You should know by yourself whether it is sturdy and perfectly leveled.
  • Purposively bump the table, if it shakes and moves, try considering another one. A strong billiard table could resist force.

Focus more on the craftsmanship of the table than its ornamental value. The quality of the table depends on how it was created and not on its aesthetically pleasing appearance.
