A long time ago, dogs were commonly kept as companions in camps.? As a camp animal, dogs were believed to provide warmth to its human buddy most especially during a ?three dog night?, an old Australian Aboriginal expression which means ?an exceptionally cold night?. Having sensitive hearing skills, they were also capable in alerting the whole camp during a visit of an unwanted wild animal or stranger. Camp dogs were also used as hunting partners because of their sharp sense of smell.
As suburbanization increased after the World War II, the population of dogs as pets increased in number. During 1950s to 1960s, pet dogs were commonly kept outside the house as guards, children?s playmates and sometimes as companions in walking. However, in 1980s, pet dogs had mostly become emotional aides to their owners to the point that pet dogs were considered as true family members.
