User Guide To 4WD and Off Road Accessories

A big number of people are enthusiasts of off-road vehicles because of its many uses, versatility, and to some, the social status it represents. Off-road vehicles generally have large tires, flexible suspensions, or even caterpillar tracks. The most common use of off-road vehicles is for areas without pavement such as in sight seeing activities, trails and forest roads. As such, there is demand for off-road accessories to be able to engage in these activities and more.

There are a several accessories and parts that are manufactured to improve the efficiency of four-wheel drive vehicles. These accessories allow for some modifications that would enable the vehicle to perform better than it originally was. This is because of the desire of many off-road enthusiasts to attempt more challenging terrain. Another reason for enthusiasts to purchase accessories is purely for aesthetic purposes.

Vehicle modifications include vehicle lifts to increase the amount of clearance between the ground and the bottom of the frame of the vehicle, body lifts, suspension lifts for better handling capabilities, axle lifts by fitting larger tires or mounting portal axles, and many more. These accessories are available from stores that specialize in automobiles and also from the retailer of the vehicles, which can be requested upon purchase.

Many types of motorsports have been established that involves racing 4WD and off road vehicles. Competitions include rally, desert racing, and rock crawling which are considered to be the three largest sports for 4WD vehicles. On the other hand, All Terrain Vehicles and motorcycle competitions include Motocross, Enduro and also desert racing such as Dakar Rallye and Baja 1000. The use of 4WD and off road accessories leads to better performance and efficiency for these types of activities.

Despite the popularity of 4WD and off road vehicles, it has also been criticized for the impact of illegal trail and off-trail activities on natural vegetation and wildlife. Erosion and habitat loss are known to have been caused by the drivers testing their vehicles against natural obstacles. The illegal use of 4WD and off road vehicles is an environmental and land management problem that is being addressed by governments. To support acts of maintaining the environment, many organisations encourage only the use appropriate trail ethics and the use of appropriate parts and accessories that would not damage the trail.

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association is concerned with the manufacturing, re-manufacturing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing of all vehicle parts, accessories, tools, equipment and services including that of four-wheel drive vehicles.

Tips when buying four-wheel drive accessories

  • Know all the details of the accessories that you need for you vehicle and compare them to each other in order to realize their suitability for you.
  • Choose the right car accessories store. Reputable and trusted dealers often have good track records and are recognized by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association.
  • Ask for help from your fellow club members when you are unsure about a certain accessory. Two heads are always better than one when it comes to decisions such as these.
  • Check all the accessories for any damage before purchasing them.
