It was in the mid-1800 when correspondence schools were first established. Instead of physically attending classes, the instructions, modules or workbooks including assessments were originally sent via mail and are now made available online thus gaining access to a virtual campus. Submission of case studies, assignments, and tests are also done in the same manner. Other institutions even provide tutorial support to students taking their courses. Tutors can assist their students via e-mail, online forums, or even through video chat.
There are many reasons why people want to advance their education in the comfort of their homes. Individuals with physical disabilities find it difficult to go to school everyday, while some individuals live in the outskirts of the city or somewhere far from educational institutions. Also, there are students wanting a particular degree that is not being offered in their local university, and instead opt for a distance learning correspondence course which is an efficient alternative to campus-based schooling.
Affordability and flexibility is another advantage of taking a correspondence course, as it gives one the option of paying for one module or lesson at a time. The enrollment and payment process is also made convenient as it is either done online, by phone or via bank transfer. Distance learning also allows the students to complete the course at their own pace. However, most courses have a fixed period and must be completed within the maximum time allowed. This setup also allows working students the flexibility they need to attend to work regularly without missing a class.
One has to be keen enough to find an accredited correspondent school as this will either spearhead their career or help embark a new one by earning a college degree. There are a number of distance teaching providers that has the ability to provide quality learning experience. The correspondence courses range from elementary and full four-year high school diploma programs and various college and graduate degree; there are also branches of military and bible schools that provide distance education courses. A person who wants to obtain a vocational or professional training certificate, or even an associate diploma, or perhaps wanting to up-skill and develop a hobby, or gain personal development can enroll in correspondence courses.
