User Guide To Dressmaking & Sewing Lessons

For some of us, one of the most fun and suitable past times we would do is sewing or dress making. Moreover, this gives the advantage of enabling a person to wear and use his own clothes and creation. With this skill, one can make his own clothes based on the color and pattern best for a person's body structure.

In the early years, sewing is only a feminine skill. But because of all the advancement of modern technology has brought people today, this activity became a past time activity and a source of income for both men and women.
If you are new to this, you should pay attention to the various sewing and dressmaking techniques needed for successful outcomes. These sewing and dressmaking techniques are very vital in order to save time, effort and materials. You must also take notes of useful tips that you have learned so it would be easier the next time you would do another needle work. If you look at it, dressmaking may seem easy, yet this activity requires extreme patience.

If you are aiming in becoming a dressmaker or fashion designer, you need to be always updated about the industry trends. You can focus your dressmaking on pieces people will buy and wear with understanding what is up and coming in the fashion design world. Besides form focusing on what people would buy and wear, it is also important to understand what kind of clothes are appropriate for the different body structures.

Sewing and dressmaking techniques are really vital to ensure the success of the overall appearance and quality of your clothing. Here are some things you want to consider which could be useful when sewing or dressmaking.

Important sewing tips and techniques:

  • Marking is the most basic sewing technique that a novice sewer must learn is marking. With markings, it helps you as you cut and shape fabric. You can make markings using a Tailor's chalk after listing all the measurements. As you mark, always be reminded that the edges are marked properly so it won't be erased once the fabric is flipped or tossed.
  • Apparently, you can't make a dress without cutting. Cutting is another important thing that one should master with the use of a sharp pair of scissors. The scissors should be sharp enough to ensure that there will be no frills hanging once the fabric has been cut. To guarantee that you get the measurements marked correctly, it would be wise to put weights on the fabric when cutting it.
  • Next is the very foundation of dressmaking, the sewing proper. In sewing, you could do it either by hand or by machine and always use new and sharp needles. This makes you sew without any hassle. It is recommended to use violet-band needles ranging from 10 to 12 in size for sewing machines and sergers for most sewers because this makes fabric feeding smoother and faster.

Just keep in mind that taking the right manner in learning how to make a dress is the only way that you do it right and will keep you addicted in sewing or dressmaking.
