User Guide To Flight Training

Flight training is a course of study that is used when learning to pilot an aircraft with the purpose of honing basic piloting skills. Although there are many types of aircraft in the world, most of the principles used to piloting them are almost the same.
Flight training involves a combination of theoretical learning conducted on the ground and practical exercise conducted in the air. The first stages of learning involve the use of a specialized training aircraft which are design for benign handling characteristics and lower costs. A flight simulator is an important tool to train pilots at much lower cost and risk than actual flying. The number of hours of flight training for private pilots range from 40 to 80 hours depending on the program and type of aircraft chosen.
The most common lessons taught at flight schools include:

  • Principles of flight
  • Flight regulations
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Radio communications
  • Flight instruments
  • Human factors
  • Medical certification
  • Airframes, engines and systems

In order for a pilot to update their license to allow them to fly a different type of aircraft, he or she would have to undergo a process called type conversion which typically involves cockpit and aircraft familiarization to allow the pilot to become more comfortable with the type. A series of test flights will also be done to become accustomed with the aircraft.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is the government agency that leads the country?s education and workplace training as well as transition to work. It collaborates with the different government agencies with the states and territories to provide easy access to educational services and support programs to the Australian people. It also aims to increase workforce participation and promote fair work practices in Australia.

Tips on choosing the best flight school

  • Consider the location of the flight school and the cost of the training. Decide upon your budget and determine only the schools that offer programs within your range. Once you have shortlisted these programs, you can compare and contrast the various flight schools and decide which one is best for you.
  • Always check if the school is accredited and if it follows a syllabus that is recognized by the proper authorities.
  • Since flight training can be costly, ask the school if they offer financial aid to help you with the fees.
  • You should know the type of aircraft you wish to fly and for what purpose. With so many different types of aircrafts and aircraft manufacturers, it is not possible to be proficient in all types.
  • When you have shortlisted a few flight schools, the best way to know the best school for you is to read the reviews by students who have previously trained there. Read what those students have to say about the schools and try to see where those students are now in the industry. This would give you ideas of what?s in store for you should you go to a particular flight school you have in mind.
