User Guide To Gynaecologists and Obstetricians

The care for the reproductive organs, especially for women, has become very important now more than ever due to the rise of diseases associated with the human genitals. Gynecology literally means "science of women" and is the counterpart to andrology which deals with specific issues related to the male reproductive system.  Gynecologists are medical specialists responsible for the care for female reproductive system.

Modern gynecologists are also obstetricians since both specialties usually overlap and form a single medical specialty. In some countries, a woman must first see a general practitioner before seeing a gynecologist. If the condition requires a more knowledgeable and surgical technique, the woman is then referred to a gynecologist.

Two noted associations that deal with gynecology and all its aspects
The Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES) is the medical association that ensures high standards and optimises patient care from gynecologists in Australia. It was established by specialised gynecologists with particular interests in gynecologial endoscopic surgery. The association acknowledges individuals who have made worthy contributions to the field of gynecology.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) is dedicated to maintain the highest possible standards in gynecology by providing world-class training and accreditation of doctors throughout Australia and New Zealand. The college ensures the highest possible health care for women from its accredited doctors.

Tips on how to choose the right gynecologist
Know your needs to make your trip to the gynecologist as pleasant and fast as possible.

  • Identify the limitations from your insurance.
  • Consult your other doctor for referrals.
  • Consult your family and friends and know who they went to and why.
  • Request information from your medical society to know the names of the doctors in your area.
  • Choose a gynecologist who is certified by AGES or RANZCOG.
  • Ask regular questions from the doctor to know if the gynecologist is knowledgeable with the procedure.
  • Get as much information about the doctor especially about his or her practice, but trust your gut feelings, to be able to have a comfortable trip to the doctor.
